I recently ran a few LinkedIn polls on IT and contract management maturity in aerospace, aviation, and defense. The results? We’re still managing daily operations with nearly 40-year-old tech: Excel, email, and Windows Explorer. If you’re lucky, maybe SharePoint—now a 24-year-old relic from the digital Bronze Age. Shocking? Not really.
Our industry leads the way in advanced engineering—supersonic jets, reusable rockets, and state-of-the-art defense systems. But when it comes to digital transformation—AI, SaaS, blockchain—we’re stuck in the digital Stone Age.
Why does a field defined by technical brilliance still run on outdated IT infrastructure? And more importantly: How do we break free?
While other industries streamline processes with AI and automation, many of us are still wrestling with spreadsheets, email chains, manual workflows, and legacy ERP systems. No wonder operational efficiency is a constant struggle—and attracting young talent is becoming a nightmare. Millennials and Gen Z simply don’t want to work with Grandpa’s tools.
Most of us weren’t trained in AI, automation, or blockchain. We built careers in engineering, manufacturing, sales, contracts, and procurement—not digital transformation. And IT departments? Often the first to see the need for change but held back by outdated strategies, executive resistance, and security concerns.
AI and blockchain are already transforming operations, contract management, procurement, and supply chains in other industries. If we don’t adapt, we won’t just lose efficiency; we’ll lose talent, customers, and competitive edge.
So why are we stuck? And how do we get unstuck?
1. Security and Compliance: The Convenient Scapegoat
Yes, we work with classified data and strict regulations—ITAR, EAR, FAR/DFARS. And yes, cloud-based AI introduces security considerations. But here’s the kicker: Banking, pharma, and even government agencies—industries with equally stringent requirements—have embraced secure cloud environments. Why can’t we?
The problem isn’t regulation—it’s risk aversion. Many companies default to “no cloud” without exploring hybrid models that balance security with flexibility. The result? Patching legacy systems that can’t integrate with modern AI tools.
Sure, on-premise (same as in-house) AI is an option, but it’s expensive, talent-intensive, and hard to scale. Meanwhile, competitors elsewhere are already optimizing supply chains and automating compliance. If we keep saying “can’t” instead of “how,” we’ll be the industry equivalent of Nokia in the age of Apple iPhone.
2. Digital Illiteracy in the Executive Suite?
Our industry has brilliant executives—just not enough digital expertise. Aerospace leaders understand engines, avionics, defense systems, and product support services inside out. But AI-driven business processes like contract lifecycle management (CLM)? Robotic process automation? Often out of our comfort zone. And not (yet) in our business objectives.
The consequences are predictable:
➡ Digital transformation gets handed off to IT.
➡ IT focuses on maintenance, not innovation.
➡ Business opportunities—like AI-powered contract compliance—get missed.
AI isn’t an IT toy—it’s a business transformation engine. Executives don’t need to become tech experts, but they do need enough knowledge to lead. Otherwise, digital investments will continue to be seen as “costs” instead of “investments.”
3. Legacy IT Departments: The Silent Productivity Killer
Most aerospace IT departments were built to ensure stability—not to lead transformation. They prioritize uptime and security over innovation, often defaulting to “no” instead of “let’s figure it out.”
Without executive involvement, IT teams end up:
❌ Rejecting SaaS solutions outright instead of exploring secure hybrid models.
❌ Patching outdated systems instead of adopting modern platforms.
❌ Treating AI as a “tech project” rather than a strategic enabler.
Digital transformation is about rethinking how we work, not just what tools we use. And that requires business leaders—not just IT—to take ownership.
4. Cultural Resistance: If It Ain’t Broke…
We work in a high-stakes industry where reliability is paramount. That breeds a “don’t touch what works” mindset. But the reality? It is broken. Manual processes, fragmented data, and outdated software lead to missed deadlines, higher costs, and lost value.
And let’s address another myth: “It is too risky because we need to digitize everything at once.” No, we don’t. That’s overwhelming and doomed to fail. Modernizing IT is a step-by-step journey—like engineering a new aircraft. But this requires a strategy. Created by our business leaders AND our brightest IT people.
5. Investment Priorities: Shiny Hardware > Process Efficiency
Aerospace loves hardware—new jets, advanced avionics, hypersonic missiles. Meanwhile, business processes are left to run on spreadsheets. Operational and contract lifecycle inefficiencies quietly bleed millions, yet budgets continue to favor physical assets over digital infrastructure.
Until we treat IT as a business enabler instead of a cost center, we’ll stay stuck in reactive mode, constantly fighting fires instead of optimizing for the future.
How Do We Fix This?
1. Executive-Led Digital Strategy Digital transformation isn’t an IT side project. It’s a leadership imperative. Executives must educate themselves on automation, AI, blockchain and own the strategy, and let IT implement—not the other way around.
2. Step-by-Step IT Modernization Start small. For instance:
✅ Digitize contract management with AI-driven CLM (not AI only: you still need a foundation).
✅ Automate sales processes with proposal automation.
✅ Introduce predictive analytics in supply chain management.
3. Hybrid Cloud Adoption Cloud doesn’t have to mean “everything everywhere.” Hybrid models allow sensitive data to stay on-prem while enabling AI to optimize processes.
4. Upskill Across Departments AI and automation impact more than IT. Train teams (including executives) across operations, sales, contracts, procurement, and finance. The better people understand the tools, the faster adoption will happen.
5. Redefine IT’s Role IT should be a partner in business transformation, not just a maintenance crew. Align IT goals with strategic business objectives.
The Stakes Are Higher Than We Realize
This isn’t just about efficiency. It’s about survival. Industries like finance, healthcare, and automotive are already leveraging AI for competitive advantage. If we don’t move now, we’ll find ourselves outpaced by more agile players.
And let’s not forget the talent equation. Younger generations won’t stick around if they’re expected to manage billion-dollar contracts with tools their parents used in the ’90s.
💡Modernizing isn’t an option; it’s an imperative.
So, here’s the question: Will we continue patching legacy systems and hoping for the best? Or will we finally give our industry the digital infrastructure it deserves?
